Popcorn Problem

Scientists have taken a second look at the packaging of popcorn now that the microwavable versions have become so popular.

A recent FDA study found that a flurotelemer a coating used to make microwave popcorn bags grease resistant ... is seeping into the popcorn.

And more of the chemical is coming off that originally thought and being absorbed into the popcorn eater's blood for long periods of time.

FDA scientists say popcorn is still safe, but they also point to recent tests in which a chemical similar to the coating found on non-stick pans, did come off popcorn bags at a higher rate.

Another recent study has also revealed the the perfluorotanoic acid extracted from the chemical does cause cancer in animals is likely to be carcinogenic in humans.

Further testing is underway, which popcorn companies move away from using the coating on their bags.
