Caledonia Costs Keep Rising

Queen's Park is reportedly giving the O-P-P nearly $22-million to help with policing at the aboriginal standoff at Caledonia.

O-P-P Commissioner Julian Fantino says the Haldimand detachment will be beefed up with several dozen officers over the year.

The officers will come fresh from the police college and the province has allocated nearly $2-million specifically for the new staff.

Six Nations protesters took over the housing development at Caledonia nearly a year ago, claiming the land is still theirs.

Officers have been pulled in from across Ontario to try to keep control of the situation and the force has racked up over $15-million in extra costs.

Fantino says once the dispute is settled the extra officers will be redeployed to other detachments.
