The Board Diversity Project is in place to foster diversity on nonprofit boards of directors in the City of London. This project's aim is to train organizations on inclusiveness, cultural sensitivity and capacity building in order for them to better attract and welcome skilled volunteers from diverse communities. In turn, this project will train prospective board members from ethno-racial/cultural communities on the rights and responsibilities of directors. Pillar Nonprofit Network will then match the trained volunteers with a board of directors depending on the skills and needs of both parties. We want to ensure that all the voices in our community are heard at the decision-making level in the nonprofit sector in order to build and strengthen our City.

For more information please contact standtutoring@gmail.com

STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur) is a national advocacy organization working to pressure the Canadian government to make meaningful commitments and take action to end the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Local chapters have been working to raise awareness and mobilize action in their communities regarding the issue. Recently, at the University of Western Ontario chapter, we have expanded our mandate to include outreach and assistance to the Sudanese community in London. STAND Western members had the opportunity to meet with leaders and members of the South Sudanese community and learn about the many challenges they face in the process of resettling into a new country and culture. It was brought to our attention that there is a great need for academic assistance for the children and youth of this community. In response, STAND Western is establishing an after-school tutoring program. University and high school students will act as tutors and mentors for the youth to help with school work, as well as improving their English and French skills. The program will be run for grades one through ten. STAND is working in partnership with the London Public Library in order to make this service available. We offer tutoring at the East London Branch (2016 Dundas St. E) from 5 pm - 7 pm on Tuesdays and the Beacock Branch (1280 Huron St.) from 5 pm - 7 pm on Wednesdays. It's a complimentary service extended to children and adolescents of any origin.
