Dock Dogs Coming To Island (VIDEO)

ERRINGTON - There's a new sport coming to Vancouver Island. It's called Dock Dogs. Dog owners throw a toy into the water, their four-legged friends take a running leap off of a dock, and the longest leap wins. There is also a height and speed component to every competition.

"I started it three months ago," Cheri Wicks said. "We're working on our final affiliation with Dock Dogs worldwide and we should have some events hopefully by the summer."

On Wednesday afternoon Wicks hosted a dock jumping lesson in Errington. Kristi Baird, who has been involved in Dock Dogs for several years, made the trip up from Washington State with her dog Henna to demonstrate the sport. "The dogs get interaction, which is very good for their brain," Wicks said. There is also a strong obedience component to the sport.

All Dock Dogs competitions are open to dogs of any size. For more information, check out http://www.westcoastdockdogs.com/.
