Worst Flooding in Decades (VIDEO)

DUNCAN - There is a state of emergency tonight in Duncan, North Cowichan , and Cowichan Tribal Lands - where flooding has forced hundreds of people out of their homes.

It is the worst flooding in the Cowichan Valley in a generation. Days of rain combined with a high tide sent the Cowichan and Koksilah Rivers over their banks.

Emergency officials admit they were surprised by today's flooding - as water rose above levees that have held the rivers back for decades.

The heavy rain had ended overnight but light rainfall continued through the day - 156mm of rain was recorded in 48 hours. The high tide came about 9am.

Streets, yards and homes flooded. Sand bags are holding back the water as well as they can.

An evacuation centre has been set up at the Cowichan Community Centre where people are waiting for the water to recede.

The Cowichan River peaked at a seven year high today.

Water levels dropped this afternoon but officials are worried they could rise again with more rain in the forecast, another system offshore, and another 20mm of rain on the way.

Late today, province said it will be providing the affected communities, homeowners, farms and businesses with Disaster Financial Assistance.
