Flood Victims Furious Over Lack of Disaster Relief (VIDEO)

VICTORIA - As flood victims begin the slow and painful process of cleaning up, its becoming clear to some of them that not all homeowners are being treated equally.

Tonight some are finding out they are not eligible for disaster relief. They're furious and they're looking to the BC government for answers.

In Duncan, Devon Mills is one of several homeowners who doesn't qualify for financial aid, because he rents his home place to a tenant, Tina Baker.

As a renter, Baker does qualify for aid on the contents of her home.

But Mills, as landlord, will have to pay for the structural repairs on his home, without help, something he says is "ridiculous."

Mills' MLA says he understands the frustration.  Bill Routley's own basement flooded when the deluge began, he says his front yard looks like a "disaster zone," with a deep and wide trench.

Routely says the provincial government has a responsibility to help those frozen out of disaster funding.

Public Safety Minister Kash Heed says disaster relief is meant to help people in their primary place of residence, not at rental properties. But he says the BC government will work to help everyone.

For Devon Mills, those considerations can't come soon enough.
